I understand Nat Geo has to be deferential to get this access, but I think everyone knows what's up. They're not being catered to, they're being watched. The ski resort has few people because normal people can't afford it or aren't allowed there. They say "our beloved leader..." so that they don't end up dead.

So you walked away with a different view of North Korea after this adventure? What exactly is that "different view"? You were in a highly controlled environment where the people you saw enjoying themselves at the ski resort probably didn't even know how to ski. How can I come to that conclusion? Because the mass of people at the bottom congregating around did not reflect the amount of people (zero) on the slopes. In this video, the only time you see laughter or glee in the North Korean people is when foreigners are showing them how to enjoy themselves. other then that you look at you like maybe you are the next meal???? There is something about a country that forces people to stay under penalty of death or internment versus a country where they try to keep you out. I'd rather be in the USA.

This can be hard to understand for young people from west side of iron curtain but this what you have seen is typical for communistic poor countries. they are building such objects for tourists to collect from them foreign money (worth a fortune in country which have not other source of income) for those poor girls (guides but there are rather like guards watching each step and reporting each single smallest step you are doing to government) such guests are like extreme rich guys but like spies as well. All what such guest can see is like big circus and have only one purpose - show how good is in such country and bring money to government. During such journey all visitors need to be extremally careful to do not break some strange rule as this can be deadly to such person. In countries like North Korea something completely innocent can be treated like espionage and such person can land in prison till end of life. This is level of paranoia in such countries.
