I once tried cuban coffee, a friend of mine that came from there liked his coffee as authentic as it goes, and served me and my sisters (we're all female) shot-glasses of the thing, i wanted to look like I enjoyed it as I like coffee, expresso, americano, any coffee goes for me, so I asked for a cup, not a glass, drank the whole thing, and man, I wasn't sure if my heart stopped or was beating so fast it looked like a flat-line.

Yeah, I had a Chilean teacher who had some whacky strong tea leaves imported from her own country and made tea that was about as concentrated as the Cuban stuff. I was the only one crazy enough to drink the whole cup, and man was I wired that day. Would do again though, was good tea.

As a black American from Georgia, I can tell you that what he says about the variety of races in the Cuban and PR population is true. I went was visiting Miami's Little Havana section and saw a dark skinned black man with long dreadlocks. I thought he was Jamaican. I tried to ask him directions on how to get to certain spot I was looking for and neither one of us understood the other. Much love and respect to Latin culture though. I need to learn Spanish.

People from the US often forget that latino and hispanic are _cultural_ identities, not _racial_ ones ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Many are mostly just familiar with the mestizo traits most common among working-class Mexican or Puerto Rican, etc. that happen to represent a significant bulk of the hispanic migrants to their country. On this bias and their own historical split between racial lines they assume the physical traits makes or breaks the identity, when in reality we come in all shapes, colors and facial features.

The joke is funny, but the grammar has been anglicized for the benefit of a larger audience that might be more familiar with the suffix "-ande". The correct ending for something large is "-ote" and "-ota", not "-ande". For example, a dog, "perro", is "perrito" (if small) and perrote (if large and male) and "perrota" (if large and female). "Very grande", like Gabriel is, would be "grandote". :-) :-) :-)

@Ce_Oso QRO Chinese speak better Spanish?? 😂😂😂 yoooo

  • Rosa

    2 ditë më parë

@Ce_Oso QRO Youre confusing the accents together. Really only Puerto Ricans replace the R with an L. The other two dont do that. Dominicans drop the r or s from the end of words sometimes, but i've never heard of them replacing it with a j. Unless youre talking about how Puerto Ricans sometimes pronounce 'arroz' so again youre confusing the accents. Also just because people speak in some kind of dialect doesnt mean they dont know the "proper" version of their own language and could just be how they speak in a more relaxed everyday kind of setting. Almost every corner of the world has its own accent/dialect/slang.

  • Taazilyn

@Nina Douglas Jajajaaj The stress is on the wrong syllable. Plus, have you read stories from the countryside of Argentina? As bad as any other country, if not worse. There are over 650* unofficial words in regular use in Argentina, most of these circulating within Buenos Aires, with many more being created every time somebody mispronounces an actual word. This is just in Buenos Aires.

The coffee story reminds me of the time when a Canadian reporter was here in Brazil covering the Olympics and was complaining about the size of the coffee cups they were being served in the press center (they are like 50ml, more or less 1.7oz - almost like the size of a single espresso cup)... Oh boy! A war started! Those coffees are really strong and you don't want to drink a lot of it straight away, you drink little by little. If you are used or are drinking at home you'll drink in a bigger cup.

My father flew to Rio way back in the 90s before flying became a chore, He and my mother got bumped to First Class. They brought out the coffee service with normal enough looking tea cups, and poured in about a shot. My dad looked at it and was like, "What's this?" "Cafe." "Why didn't you fill it?" "Would you like me to, sir?" "Please." So she did, with this sort of 'I want to laugh but I don't dare' expression on her face. Just like Fluffy said - it was Super Juiced coffee. It wasn't a beverage, it was a street drug! He managed to get through the cup and was wired to his eyeballs the rest of the flight. He brought back an entire suitcase of that coffee.

First sip and I turned to my brother and asked “why do they serve watered down coffee? Is it because I am a minor? This tastes really bad I can’t drink 300ml of it.” he tells me “idk, ask for an espresso”. Ok, fine, order the espresso. IT’S WEAK ESPRESSO. I later asked the barista if they serve watered coffee to teenagers or something like that and the barista goes like “are you Brazilian?“ “yeah, why?” “That’s how coffee is here, get used to it 😂”. I was gutted.

My dad is Dominican and when I was 18 my ex girlfriend (girlfriend at the time) was over at our house for the day. She asked my dad why he had a tiny cup of coffee. He tried explaining to her that it was expresso. Much like Cuban coffee, it's very strong. She didn't believe him and went to the kitchen and poured herself a mug of expresso(bustello), from the large stovetop expresso perculator my dad had. She was super hyper for about 10 minutes then I heard a horrible rumbling from her gut. She BOLTED to the bathroom. I'm talking a full sprint! And then I hear "Babe. . .I think I uhhh. . .made a mistake! She was in there for over an hour and came out of the bathroom sweating. Like she was visibly sick. Suddenly the man was really mad saying "Why are you yelling at me, I'm only only asking for the post office". We had to intervine and explain him that it was only their way of speaking and that they were actually being nice and trying to help him. He wasn't really conviced when he left the store. So good! I learned Spanish in Santo Domingo, and the teachers told us (we were all priests and nuns) that they weren't going to teach us 'their' Spanish, but 'regular' Spanish. We asked why was that and they said because Dominicans speak so fast that no one else can understand them. Only later when I understood a little of the language did I realize that it's true. We would joke that Dominicans speak so fast, they don't have time to pronounce all the letters! (Some other time I will have to tell you what their faces looked like when we asked them how to curse. Trust me, we knew not everyone would be nice around us and we wanted to know what they said. LOL!)

I had my first Cuban coffee at Gordos cafe in Tallahassee. The waitress ask me if I wanted some as she'd made a cup for a customer and had a full styrofoam cup leftover. At least six ounces worth. No charge. I knew Cuban coffee was good, but I didn't know how strong it was. I drank the whole cup. Then it was just like Fluffy said...I was lit. :D

Every time she gets mad she will start speaking Spanish at a mile a minute. Couldn't understand what she was saying but I knew she was ready to . The only way to make her calm down is to say por favor no me mates or por favor no lo mates. She would start laughing and calm down

All of this is so damn true it feels unreal with it all laid out. lol. I haven't laughed that hard in hours, much less 6 minutes. I went on a cruise a long time ago with a big group of friends, and we were shipping out from Florida. So we all flew in earlier in the day, chilled and wanted to go to a Cuban restaurant. The best and most authentic one we could find. so 5 of us piled into the Cab we called (this was back in 2012. There was no Uber. Well there was, but it wasn't as big across the country) and we got lucky with a Cuban driver. So we asked the guy "Hey man, if you wanted to go to a restaurant and was looking for some Cuban food. What restaurant would make you the food closest to your moms cooking? Dude was like "Say no more!" and took off. I don't drink coffee but the other friends did, all of them had nearly the same reaction both with the size and being wicked wired afterward. The food though... HOLY... I still cannot think of better food. I was super stuffed and still wanted to order more. Everything on that plate was SOOO good. As far as them being wired out of their minds on caffeine, that worked out for them. As we went immediately to a concert after dinner. Plenty of time to work it off. haha

My first day they introduced me to un cafecito. I was 13. And because of my world travels I can pretty much tell where someone is from by looking at their features. Yes, there's black Cubans and white Mexicans with blue eyes and blonde hair like my mom. Leave your zip code once in a while ppl. 😉

@Charlie Dillon Caucasion in Mexico just means they're pure Castillan. Most Mexicans are mestizos which are some sort of mix between the indios and white. The more Indio in their blood, the less white they look and vice versa. That said, Spanish "white" is not the same as American "white". Spaniards are Mediterraneans and their complexion is slightly darker compared to the Germanic "white" of the north.

It was a demitasse cup. I remember that I stayed awake all night, but that was ok because if I didn't, I would have wet the bed. The dinner was amazing. The coffee was good, but I don't drink coffee anyway. The school was up north, but he was from Florida. Interestingly many years later, we both practice in Florida.

I knew an exchange student from Italy once, she had brought her own little kettle to brew her own espresso in. It was lovely but i was used to something more potent. Fine grinded beans in a filter and poor boiling water on it. The extra heat compared to ANY machine ensures that way more flavor gets in but also way more of the caffeine is solved into the water. It has the potency of espresso, i drink it in units of regular cups instead of the supposed tiny cups and it has the flavor of a regular cup of strong coffee. If you drink more than 2 of those, you'll be wired beyond belief. I stick with just 2 on a day.

@AwoudeX The beans in Cuban Coffee are processed differently...Cubans make it on the stove the old fashion way also, but, use a cheesecloth for a filter...The more grounds added to the ratio of water, is what gives it it's strength...If I made it on the cheesecloth method, that Cuban Coffee would killed a whole town in just one brew...😂...Blessings....💖

Most of the Spanish speaking people here in Washington state are Guatemalan, so I recognize a different accent when I hear it.😁

:) :) :) You should google "how to prepare mate, Argentinian style". Drinking mate is part of our culture, a ritual, a ceremony. What is mate? It is an infusion, somewhat similar to tea, which is prepared in a container called "mate" - a sort of emptied-out and dry calabash gourd - where the dried chopped and ground leaves of the mate herb are placed. You pour hot water little by little around the metal straw you drink from, until all the yerba is wetted, LITTLE BY LITTLE :):):) It becomes a deep rooted habit and a "companion". Try to find a photo of Messi not playing football (sorry, "soccer" ;) where he's not holding a mate gourd with a bombilla inserted (which means he's been drinking mate! ;)

Friggin funny as snit! My family sponsored two Cuban refugee families from the 60s and 70s exodus. They did not swim. But they dared all to be in a fishing boat to drift far enough out to be able to escape. The story told on one family that had their wives and children stored away in compartments under the boat seats and the Cuban marine patrol boarding their vessel to see what they were doing. The women were petrified and almost smothered their very young to make it through. It is never easy to break the chains of totalitarianism. As a very young American, I was taught the sacrifices these people made to be free. My parents work with them to assimilate and finally become US citizens. It was not easy for my parents. But they persevered and make it happen. The funny thing is, as a young person, we had some benefits that maybe the parents were not aware of. Because my father was supporting two families, we were forced to eat at Royal Castle many nights. Oh yeah! To a child, it was Heaven. But the coup-de-gras was when these Cuban families (which by then were part of our family) invited us to their new home to a pig roast. What an existential experience, pig slow cooked in a sand pit and plantains. So good!
