Another awesome review! At 11:36 Jay mentioned the lack of a fuel volume gauge. The competition Cobras had a fuel pressure gauge and 2 fuel pumps, when the main pump began to run dry the gauge would fluctuate and the driver would switch to the second pump which had a pickup that extended deeper in the tank. The added benefit of two separate electric fuel pumps being a backup in case one failed. Source Shelby's Wildlife by Wallace Wyss ,1977

It's very easy to see the thrill you got driving that gem. I've been there 50 years ago. I was walking into class at college, here in South Florida, in 69 and noticed a really dirty 427 Cobra, with a rag top, knock offs in the parking lot, for sale in the front wind shield, $5500, never forgot that. It was an impossible amount for me in 69, but boy I wanted that car, imagine it's worth today. So I guess that was my promise to myself, go after Shelbys and Bosses. I have a 1967 Shelby GT500, 427 Tunnel Port, dual 4 IMSA/SCCA race car, I raced, that gave me the thrill in the day. Unfortunately, my pocket is not that I can fully restore it to it's hey day, I would like to, but not so far and you know the feeling, you just can't part with it yet. I still have the spare motors, Dan William 4 speeds that never broke. Back then is was really small time garage racers and we had tons of fun, especially at party central during Sebring. I'm your age now Jay and wondering if I'll ever bring to life these cars. I have a 68GT500KR convertible, 4 spd, with air, kinda rare, a 66 GT350, 67 GT350, 68 GT500, 69 GT350, 69 GT350 rag, several Bosses, all need restoration, sure would like to, hey maybe I'll bury them with me ? LOL. My friend who raced with me, recently sold his McLaren, a Lola street car, several Ferraris and a beautiful black maranello, one of the best looking Ferraris in my estimation, two Boss 429's and several 68 Shelbys. He said it was the hardest thing he ever did in his life to sell everything. I sure wish I had lotto money to have bought them all. I miss driving that 67 GT 500 427 TP Race Car all the time, but the nice thing is, you can always recall that experience anytime you want, like the best girl you've ever been with, a fine memory.

I'm pretty sure that the S/C that were converted from an actual Competition car, had two fours, while the Competition had a single large four barrel. I know someone who has one of each. Also, if I'm correct, Jay does not have an actual Cobra but a replica built for him long ago before he was able to be buying really high dollar cars.

A friend had CSX3100, a 427 side oiler medium riser car. He hated driving it so I got to drive it all the time. We were on the interstate doing 6500 RPMs in 4th gear--about 156MPH. We hit a dip where there was an underpass, the car got a little light, AND THE MASSIVE REAR TIRES STARTED SPINNING. That was about 50 years ago, but for some reason I remember it clearly. HAHA.

A friend of mine has a replica with an actual side oiler in it. Holley 4-barrel on it like this one with rail rockers (full roller valvetrain). Same 4-speed as the original too. Rear is independent but unlike the originals, it's a jag style rear with a 9 inch center, which is kind of a hybrid control arm setup. Original has full upper and lower control arms. Front suspension is very similar to the original from what I can find on it, as is the frame. Rides and handles really well with coilovers front and rear. Cruising at 30-40mph, in any gear, punch the gas for a split second and it feels like someone hit you from behind. I've ridden and driven some high horsepower cars, but the torque on this thing is like nothing I've ever experienced before being in such a light car. I had a Saturn years ago with a manual transmission that weighed about the same as the Cobras and it felt peppy with 130 hp. Most of these cammed out 427's properly tuned make over 500hp to the wheel. I launched it at about half throttle once off idle and it felt like riding a bike because the front end was trying to come off the ground. I started leaning forward to stop it lol. Easier to control than I had heard though which surprised me. I had a couple original 60's cars and they were a handful to drive just going straight down the road cruising. Not this car. Very predictable in corners and it communicates to you about when it wants to let go. Throttle is easy to control but only time you can mat it is if you're pointed straight and got a big runway in front of you. That speedo climbs blindingly fast and if you're mid corner it will break the tires loose at any speed in any gear if you use all the throttle. I think he had 305's on the rear so it had gobs of traction but it would still light them up no problem.
