Turbulent Flow is MORE Awesome Than Laminar Flow
Everyone loves laminar flow but turbulent flow is the real MVP.

I got into turbulent flow via chaos. The transition to turbulence sometimes involves a period doubling. Turbulence itself is chaotic motion, it is unpredictable and sensitively dependent on initial conditions. What surprised me is all the ways turbulent flow is useful to us. It is diffusive, meaning it causes mixing. This is useful in jet engines or rocket nozzles (which Destin studies) and is important to achieve in microfluidic devices, which are so small that turbulent flow is actually difficult to achieve. Turbulent flow can energize a boundary layer, which is important to maintain flow attachment over a wing, maintaining lift and delaying stall. Similarly a turbulent boundary layer over a golf ball reduces pressure drag allowing golf balls to fly further. This is the reason for the dimples on golf balls. Flow transitioning to turbulence in the wake of a bluff body can create periodic vortex shedding. This beautiful phenomenon can be seen in the von Kàrmàn vortex street in clouds viewed from space. Turbulence is everywhere, in the air currents in a room, in your aorta, in the breaths you exhale, in oil pipelines and water pipes, in the flow over cars and ships and planes. Animals have evolved for it (like dead fish swimming up stream) and we have engineered our environment, our planes and golf balls for it. Laminar flow may be nice to look at (which is why we use it in decorative fountains) but turbulent flow does the real lifting.

Ad plug with science? You have captured my attention, sir.
If you had a laminar flow of say some mystical invincible water in space that just began existing at a high flow rate, without interference would that mean laminar flow could be sustained
Im not proud to talk about this.. I purchased cottonelle flushable wipes a few a couple months back... Im still finding remnants of them stuck to my ass.
Nice video! One mistake, its the angle of attack from an airplane wing or helicopter rotor that makes the stall, not speed. Helicopters have rotors that turn with a constant speed mostly, to heavy a load or to thin of an atmosphere and the angle of attack on the blades will pass the limit of laminairflow and stall = turbulant. But thats an other video. Anyhow, well done, both laminar and turbulence are great!! Grtz
*We need both!* Just ask a Glider (Sailplane) pilot… Laminar flow is crucial on his aircraft’s wings for them to produce lift so he can fly. On a larger scale he does want turbulence in the air because that means thermals that can help him stay in the air…
Those turbulence flags would be a great flight training tool. I'm sure it's been done but have they used the flags as ass wipe yet according to this videos ending.. jk it was educational XD
Laminar = order.. Turbulence = chaos. Chaos is the natural order of the universe. From chaos comes order.
I've never seen so much effort, observation and scientific reasoning used to justify something that's just flat-out wrong before.
All points are still connected, like strikethrough text?
4:36 ok ok I'll play KSP again! Music instantly made me nostalgic for more rocket mishaps :D

at 4:08 that "auhh" you hear is from an anime girl named Rikka Takanashi from a show called Chuunibyou. Look up on youtube "Rikka is a ninja" and you'll see the scene where she makes the noise XD
I’m sorry Dustin.. but umm I can’t be part of this laminar flow club anymore. 😢 sorry it has to be this way but... I found a club that is better for me and I hope you can understand. It’s called turbulent flow and I hope you understand. It’s not you.. its me. I’m sorry 😞
Veritasium: “See? Turbulent flow is *EVERYWHERE!* Me: So, its not special at all? Derek: OK HOLD ON
heard somewhere (recently) that a black hole vortex has exactly the same properties of a hurricane/tornado vortex
From my understanding, and being a gamer, laminar flow is linear, and turbulent flow is tactile, or bumpy.
As soon as you said that it’s disorganized and messy I instantly loved it
why be uniform when you can be turbulent and unique. Turbulent flow is more powerful and chaotic and all around more beautiful
5.8 million people (views) are interested in Turbulent vs laminar flow ? How interesting is that ?
As an RC plane builder/pilot im aware of this, too. It is well known that especially for small and slow models a rough paper or silk covering is superior to a super smooth plastic film. It goes so far, that someting having a very nasty stall behaviour can be fixed by just "dusting" a light coat of hair spray over the wing. Speed/racing models of the same size are as smooth as possible though, likely because skin friction begins to dominate then.
Thank you, I'm experiencing life turbulence of near end of life...our time on planet Earth is very short, I'm saddened of my journey towards turbulence...may your journey be blessed...
at 14:40 a dead fish is swimming due to turbulence!
There's the phenomena with turbulent flow on dimpled surfaces at different velocities - that can reduce drag coefficients on objects. It's a fun quirk of turbulence and would love to have seen it in this video :) maybe next time?
5:12 they were forming fractals!!! this is so cool

"there is no Definition for turbulent Flow..." Reynolds number: "am I a joke to you?"
Thank you for sharing this fabulous and detailed explanation on Turbulent Flow and Laminar Flow. It completely enplanes a video i made in 2016 on a gentlemen named Erle Pedersen Kewarra Jet bottom surfboards that he has been making for some 40 odd years and the industry had rejected the concept saying that it increased drag but in reality it went faster .
It's funny, cause if their characters were going to be designated a flow based on content it could be argued that Destin leans laminar and Derek is turbulent lol

Hi Eddie
Yeap, as long as you are not working in a laminar flow hood.
Well thanks for making me but tickets to Huntsville just so I can yell at Destin "Turbulent FLOW IS BETTER NERD!"
Why don't they make cars with dimples in them like golf balls?
the only reason I like turbulent flow now (not better than laminar) is the music lol

When you introduce colours and dyes turbulent flow is a hair cooler than laminar. However with a colourless solution (i.e. 99% OF THINGS) laminar flow is way cooler zero doubt
In college I would blow my weed smoke into the sunrays coming through my window and watch the flow for hours
If u don't mind . Why did u feel it was Necessary to tell everybody that video was filmed before the covid saftey requests?
They’re both great, but turbulent has the edge.
Suspending reality for a second, would a frictionless fluid flowing over a frictionless surface create turbulence?
laminar is bae, you heretic.
I give up...What is in the fish tank to demonstrate Turbulent Flow..?
Dead fish swimming is fuckin freaky
I will try to simplify. If you can define a flow through equations, it is bound to be laminar flow. If you can't, it is turbulent flow. When you showed vortex motion in the beginning, it can be easily described by equations. Hence, Laminar. On the other hand, if you think you can define the stream which is not laminar, via equations, it loses the it's being as turbulent flow. All because, turbulence by definition cannot be defined and is random. BTW I am pro TRANSITIONAL FLOW. 2400
This video is exactly why laminar flow is better- it's so much more unique! Turbulent flow is everywhere, but laminar flow is a very rare occurrence
Great! I'll buy 5 of these turbulent thingies!

Veritasium: Laminar flow is perfect. Most of the world is not perfect. Therefore Laminar flow is bad. Faulty logic. Actually, ALL flow is laminar, turbulent flow is just a more complicated version of laminar flow. Just because we don't understand all the factors influencing it that doesn't mean it isn't still operating via a set of predictable rules!
what about those insane water cutter they use to cut the windows of airplanes? Are they laminar too even though the water flows really quick?
i would say people tend to adhere to either turbulent or laminar flow in the expression of their chi

It " literally " cannot do anything . It can physically do something. The only way it can ( literally ) do anything is if you describe something in you're writing. I would think someone with a college degree would actually known the definition of the word literally. That's why people don't take Millennials seriously

Maybe the most interesting part is where turbulent flow meets laminar flow.
