The Dunning-Kruger Effect - Cognitive Bias - Why Incompetent People Think They Are Competent
Special thank you to Trace Dominguez for all his help on this video. Please go check out his channel for some neat science videos! althe.info
In the field of psychology, the Dunning-Kruger effect is a cognitive bias in which people mistakenly assess their cognitive ability as greater than it is. It is related to the cognitive bias of illusory superiority and comes from the inability of people to recognize their lack of ability. Without the self-awareness of metacognition, people cannot objectively evaluate their competence or incompetence.

Saying that you are the best doctor is the same as a pizza hat claiming that they have the best pizza in the world. Do they have the best pizza challenge. Rick Sanchez
This is such a big issue. I know so many people that literally got into politics two months ago via Twitter echo chambers and now post ALL DAY every day relentlessly acting like they have PhDs in Political Science - and as someone with a degree in Political Science I can tell you that what they're saying is either 101 level stuff or absolute postmodernist nonsense
As soon as you brought up global warming I laughed at you. Nothing like getting lectured to buy liberals. Love it.
Elon Musk? Einstein? Is it actually necessary to do or discover new things? Apple Computer Corporation was started from a garage.
These self-reporting studies always suffer from the fault that they assume the people are answering honestly from conviction. For example, I may just say I am better than average in something just to be respecting myself and not because I really believe I am. Or, I may just be being perverse and lying due to a personality fault. Polls are often wrong due to this. The data cannot be trusted.
Pretty much describes most sjw's out there.
A fool thinks himself to be wise but a wise man knows himself to be a fool
*Quote or comment by someone who we think was brilliant* *personal anecdote about me being stupid* "Hah, now everyone will think i'm one of the smart people!"
He not taking into account that some of those men who think they can score against the queen serena are racist and sexist, or feel entitled.
But Williams lost to a man in tennis multiple times. They weren’t even high compared to the men in their leaderboards.
0:47 why the fuck would you.....
Mm
And why do smart people think they can fool average people they think they're fooling low IQ people really it's the smart people fooling themselves
Serena Williams was ranked #1 in women’s tennis, not in over all. Didn’t some average college male tennis player beat her?
I appreciate your videos, I even vlog them on any platform available on social media....
Try winning an argument with a flat-earther (if you can find any these days), then try to argue with your math teacher, see which one is easier at winning.
"MOST PEOPLE CANNOT BE ABOVE THE AVERAGE" . . If a a small group underscores badly it tends to put the "average" to a very low level, which makes possible to have this observation, although you are right in 90% of the cases.
White belt for life!
Interesting topic, well done on the video. A lot of interesting comments. Could you consider doing a video on "Tall poppy syndrome"?
Thank you long time 123 you so go by peace love and happiness my friend
Wow I now understand how Trump works and his capital rioters think.
Now I understand how Donald Trump and the MAGA-movement think 😂
I need to watch this again for all of this information to sink in...
You are all Non-sense - Earth is still Flat
Watched this after watching TED... 😒😒😒
I think I know more about the Dunning Kruger effect that anyone 💪

Cognitive bias makes brain more gooder
Most people think intelligence/intellect only equates to memory & how quick someone thinks. Yet, how one thinks is more important then anything. Plenty of quick witted dipsticks with a good memory 😂 Look at all the $ grants given towards "geniuses" working on stuff that is still considered a theory & they will rarely, if ever, question anything outside of that box... because that's now there lifes work. If you say anything that goes against what they're working on, you're an idiot, and don't have the piece of paper proving they're superior "a degree" for memorizing other people's theories & achievements 🙄🤔🤯
Never talk to anyone that will not admit when they are wrong or being stupid. You can not get threw to those people. I will admit my shortcomings and in that aspect im am able to grow and learn from that however you can never grow or learn if you never recognize your shortcomings.
"Most people have to be average, because that's how statistics work." -- Ugh.
EXAMPLE: Every single person who watched this video, went to social media and informed their audience about it, thinking they were smart, and not one of the majority who overestimate their ability.

Well this is disappointing
Holy shit.....I know nothing 😳. Damn this great video.
Think of the Dunning-Kruger effect as bubbles of knowledge around a person. A small bubble means the person can touch all the inner walls of it; that's their entire universe that they have conquered, therefore they arrogantly overestimate their abilities (God complex). With growing knowledge and wisdom, the further the edges of this bubble expand, the smaller and more humbled/ modest you feel and the more you realize there's so much more you could learn... Coupled with a greater existential awareness of the vast void that is the unknown, like, what the hell is your considerable epistemological bubble expanding INTO?! Is there an absolute epitome to what *can* be known?
bruh this really applies to my father, he thinks he is all knowing and shit but in fact he know nothing. even to the point when someone presented a better idea, he would get angry and say “this person thinks he/she smarter than me? they don’t know shit” his ego is indescribable it hurts my brain
i live by a moto that explains this perfectly. the world is in 3 parts 1/3 have a brain and the other 2/3 just alive
The evaluation of Dunning Kruger assumes performance evaluations are not biased themselves. "Duning Krugers" might actually be super geniuses.
like Elon Musk ? just saying ...
I would say there is a difference between knowing nothing but think they do and knowing something but nobody else does and dosnt want to listen.
Sounds like a typical Narcissistic Personality trait...
The ignorant people being drawn with fat bellies while other people aren't shows this creator's implicit bias...
The picture just triggered half of the USA
So long story short I’m both stupid and smart.
Anyone else just happen to stop by here around this time of year? This year?
Yes most people can be above average. Apparently you don’t understand the difference between average and mean.
So that explains why vegans are full of shit
The only thing I know for sure is how very little I actually know. Next to nothing. And the more I learn, the more questions I have. One of the most important things I've learned so far is that just because I think something is true does not mean it's true. Just because I think I am a certain way does not mean I am that way. It's been humbling to say the least.

If you think ur an expert in psychology after watching this ! Then yes ur correct you have the CB 🤣
Comedy is a subjective thing. How did they come up with a conclusive finding?
Most doctors are not doctors because they are above average intelligence, they are normally from a well off family and can retain what they read long enough to pass a test, only a few get better at their trade consistently that is why so many people sue doctors for mistakes.
Most nascar drivers believe they are above average drivers, lol what dummies.
Why are all the stupid people in these videos sketched fat?
Agreed! Many dumb people try to corrupt true authenticity. Good ones can discern good ones and evil ones gather with evil ones.
Trump...better than everybody at everything...so he thinks
U see I think I'm below average in school and yep my sat and GPA reflect that (I really don't care I just wanted to be dumb and funny)
The problem is people don't know how to say, "I don't know!"
I know i'm smart because i'm gladiator in wow challenger in lol 2700 points in chess.com i hold masters degree in mechanical science ingeneering i solve so many puzzle. And i love the anime call phi brain: puzzle of god. And many anime like it that makes you think. Also read books when i feel it is time to read. yea ball earthers def have major dunning-kruger going on....
We don’t have infinite knowledge on the internet. Hmmmm ironic
we should all act competent, while still feeling incompetent when we get home.
I thought there will be some funny comments ....instead most of them looks like university courses. I guess I will have to move to another video...I am so disappointed. And NO. Please don't reply to my comment, let me die stupid.
I'm so lucky to be stupid rather than being an important and serious person.
A corollary perhaps: Only sane people know they’re a little crazy.

Tell me what web site would teach me the most about physics. It must provide readable, understandable, and complete subject knowledge comparable to that of higher learning institutions. It must not come with cost/trial assumptions of the possession of esoteric or specialized knowledge or principals and be incomplete in it's subject matter. If you use the phrase or one similar too "search it yourself online" or "it's there, you haven't searched hard enough." Then I'll demand your unicorn, your pot of gold at the end of a rainbow, and 10% interest rate bank account as collateral.

@Jared Allen I guess this conversation is an example of what this video was trying to demonstrate.
Jared Allen

I didn't say they weren't perfect. But that makes an easier argument to tackle. I disapprove and am disappointed in existence in general as it seems that it's based on waiting for others to make it better, while everyone does there hardest to stop them. I want knowledge to improve my life and the life around me based on my understanding of it. But to say something is out there, available and exists while putting the burden of proof on someone else isn't helpful and can be seen as malicious. Where if someone asks where or what something is, it is honest and better to say you don't know rather than point them in a wrong and fruitless direction. I believe many have gone witless looking for something that wasn't there while others said it is
Michaelangelo Evans
13 ditë më parë
@Jared Allen so, initially you ask why isn't there a free website that has all physics knowledge. I asked why such a site would ever exist ("very high quality" and "free" tend to not go together). you state that it should be a human right. I point out that libraries are government's attempt at filling that need. you point out that libraries aren't perfect. Is there anything that is perfect in this world?
Jared Allen
13 ditë më parë
@Michaelangelo Evans No, just as a Walmart won't carry everything that is and ever was in products, a library does not have all the knowledge people are looking for and sometimes not even in the quantity. Are you someone who is self-satisfied that you cannot believe their to be people who are not? Not arguing or calling you anything bad to be honest I wish I were but I've been hitting too many walls and limitations.

It's all cognitive bias, the fact that every single idea that we have in our heads was by and large put there by bouncing each idea off the people around us before calling it our own. If you don't do your own research and read information from books like the dictionary and encyclopedia, books with just information, not tilted information, it's cognitive bias. The idea that everyone couldn't possibly be wrong is ridiculous because everyone thought the world was flat, they all thought wearing denim jeans was rebel wear, they all think that a life without an bumps in the road is really living, the wrong ideas that fill people's heads could fill a library. The concept mentioned at the beginning was the most correct, the beginning of knowledge is knowing that you know nothing, that means the only right answer is that there are no right answers. The room for improvement will always be because knowledge is infinite and we have a birthday. Knowledge had no birthday, so in comparison to the infinity of knowledge no matter how long you live being you have a birthday and it didn't means we, all life forms, will always be lacking. Nobody can have it all and you really wouldn't want to, then what would you do?
I think I stink at every single thing I usually do - must be a genius then. 😂😂😂😂
This just explains people who don't apply themselves physically as much as they do mentally. It's not an illness
