VERY VERY IMPORTANT COMMENT: Literally as I was uploading this video, I got an email back from Beastgrip and they let me know after their initial testing the DOF adapter is NOT compatible with the 12 Pro Max due to focus issues. Which is exactly what I found in this video. When I did test shots on the 12 Pro and other phones the shots came out much sharper! So if you have a 12 Pro Max id hold off until they come out with a fix or updated hardware but if you have other existing phones, you should be good! Some shots were usable but Im happy im not crazy that I couldnt get it to focus right haha.

@Emmanuel Merhan Glad it’s working out. I’m using close-up lens, but just straight without attaching an additional lens. I have some old Vivitar close-up lenses, but I am using more expensive (and much thicker) Kenko close-up lenses, plus I am using over-sized ones (49mm) with a step-up ring. Those Vivitars, with a +10 are cheap! Nice!

Nice one, I think you’re right to push the phone camera technically, after all pretty much everyone has one and people should know how they can explore the potential of these things. I’m not a videographer myself I shoot stills on FF Mirrorless and M43 but I may well explore video shooting on my phone thanks to you and others like you who show us the way. Solid video, dude! It's amazing what cell phones can do these days. That said, the beastgrip doesn't solve a practical problem in my mind. The cost of the cage, DOF adapter, and supports plus shipping equal out to a decent used mirrorless camera body. The only use-case that makes real sense to me is if you wanted to absolutely flex on everyone else in a mobile filmmaking competition, but I feel like there are better uses of resources in that scenario. Still cool to know what's out there, though.

Why is no reviewer mentioning serious issues with the camera? Exposure warble, poor audio, dropped frames especially in HDR video.. cmon guys

If by exposure warble you mean the tone mapping exposure issues I do address that in my latest Filmic Pro video from last week. The other stuff though I have not seen any of that. The audio from the iPhone is one of the best phone mics I’ve ever heard. I’ve never seen a dropped frame. I’ve heard some people talk about what looks like a flicker in Dolby vision but I’ve never noticed that.

@michael tobin I did a lil digging and I found something about the HDR Dolby Video is not supported at 60 FPS for the front as it is in the back. My guess is that it is designed that way because the lenses in the back better support the Dolby? Either way it’s not a dealbreaker. I’m really excited about this phone and hope to own one soon! Correct pretty much all smartphones have a lower quality front facing camera. This is because it generally has to be a lot smaller hence why back cameras have big bumps and lenses and the front fits into the screen. Also when someone is taking a picture of something important or where quality would be very useful, it’s generally the rear camera as if you were using a regular dedicated camera.

Did I understand correctly that if you use the Filmic Pro app you can override the iPhone's normal function of automatically choosing its own variable bit rate and set it manually to a higher, constant bit rate? If so, that is GREAT for those who want to create professional grade video with the 12 Pro Max. I'm not suggesting that it would be used for tv and movies or anything like that, but uses like real estate videos and ALthe videos should be perfect.

Max bitrate achieved on my Note 20 Ultra is 220mbps, using mcpro24fps and a log curve. The file was noticibly heavier yet the image produced looked terribly rubbish to me, or worse than what the native app could make at its lower bitrate (around 60-70mbps with 4K HDR 10-bit) - and although that was a quick test in low light. I find that apps such as Filmic Pro or mcpro24fps arent as useful as they used to be on phones that have pro-modes (S and Note Series, Xperias, etc), unless using anamorphic lenses or DOF adapters. But will Apple ever release such a mode? With such a rig and with a follow focus, it would be easier to use a shoulder rig to add one more contact point, or with one taking support on the chest.

Is the bitrate of the file the same for HEVC and H.264 files? If so you should shoot HEVC as it's going to effectively give you more bitrate.

@michael tobin well we all know that with the right techniques u can make any camera look good I’ve even seen footage matching iPhone footage to red camera footage so to my understanding it’s not the camera that makes a filmmaker it’s the filmmaker himself but who knows make the iPhone 13 will reach the cinema camera level lol but honestly I believe if this keeps up Hollywood will go out of business haha

Big difference between the difference between the technical abilities of an iPhone vs something like an ARRI mini LF and yes an iPhone can be used to make a movie. I’m pretty sure my message is clear in my videos that smartphone cameras have gotten amazing and are very capable. But they still are a long long way off from a cinema camera

With the release of movies like Unsane, Tangerine, and High Flying Bird which were all shot on an iPhone it as been proven that u can use a smartphone for legitimate filmmaking we’re not just talking about an ordinary cell iPhones are powerful computers that can do various things so of course it wasn’t designed to be a camera first and while it is true that filming with an iPhone has some limitations u can work around those limitations that why they designed the gear and camera accessories like the beastgrip and sandmarc lenses to turn ur smartphone into a legit cinema camera

"Pro" is put there by Apple to stroke the ego of the buyer. It doesn't have anything to do with features, LOL! Did you find that this phone did a decent job at stop action? I have found the Samsung phones better at freezing motion. Thanks for the honest review.
