Does Planet 9 Exist?
A planet has been predicted to orbit the sun with a period of 10,000 years, a mass 5x that of Earth on a highly elliptical and inclined orbit. What evidence supports the existence of such a strange object at the edge of our solar system?
Huge thanks to:
Prof. Konstantin Batygin, Caltech
Prof. David Jewitt, UCLA
I had heard about Planet 9 for a long time but I wondered what sort of evidence could support the bold claim: a planet at the very limits of our ability to detect one, so far out that its period is over 60 times that of Neptune. The planet 9 hypothesis helps explain clustering of orbits of distant Kuiper belt objects. It also explains how some of these objects have highly inclined orbits - up to 90 degrees relative to the plane of the solar system. Some are orbiting in reverse. Plus their orbits are removed from the orbit of Neptune, the logical option for a body that could have ejected them out so far. The fact that the perihelion is so far out suggests another source of gravity was essential for their peculiar orbits.

I like how we can take a photo of a black hole but we can’t know if there is a 9th planet
I love how messy their offices are
They should name it Kān
Pluto has been recoined a planet in 2018. My twelve-year trauma (roots in school indoctrination and kids' dreams) has been restored 😊!
Dude's a Mathamgision! He's going to practice mathamagics until it exists! To be a real Scientist, first you have to practice real Science! Mathemagics is the stuff of nerds!

Thought the unfound 9th planet already had a name? Nibiru
Konstantin Batygin is a kick-ass name.
To be honest, this red hot shirt guy seems so chill, i hope he does find it man...
Planet 9 is Pluto.
1:33 "let's start at the beginning. It is in ancient Greece where our story begins. It's a warm summer evening circa 600BC. You've finished your shopping at the local market or 'Agora'..."
David Bowie it is.

I want to be like David, he’s so cool
Call it "Pluto is a Planet"
“Pluto’s a planet! Bitch!”
David Bowie will be neat name for a planet ;)
I don't think so *David Bowie* is a nice name for planet. It takes out all the seriousness of the gravity of the situation.
If it does exist, what difference will it make?. No difference. None.
I've been wondering if the 10,000 year orbit of planet nine would have the type of impact on the earth's climate and electromagnetic polity hypothesized by Graham Hancock and the Younger Dryas event from roughly 12,600 years ago. Perhaps nearly all of humanity is destroyed and re-built based on the cycle of planet nine. As it nears earth, or perhaps is the furthest point away, is causes these mass extinction events.

Planet 9 could be called Hades

The planet should be named Minerva.
@15:00 the 'farther out' you go, there is a point at which you could hide almost anything and it would be invisible. how far out is that!?
I'm from Planet 10 I can guarantee you Planet 9 exists... those bastards... it's a lousy place to call home!

There's something weird about being taught advanced scientific ideas by a guy in a RHCP shirt lol.
Aren't the orbits stretched out because our solar system is flying?

It's going to be called Mianus (MEE-AH-NUS).
Aren't some people calling the 9th planet, Nibiru?

It is Pluto, case closed.

Actually it's planet X (10)...
I've probably smoked too much pot, but having watched the video on the Dzhanibekov Effect a couple days before seeing this video. Could there be a connection? Planet 9 is the long rotation counterbalancing against the rotation of the other planets and the Kepler belt. Again, I know not of what I speak.

3 sigma for scientific results. Lol, I didn’t know it’s that bad. In software engineering our we always aim for 5-6 sigma. Anything less as outcome is basically considered “garbage”.
I am going to use my skills and talents to find planet 9 - if it exists.
David Bowie? Listen, now... Sure, there's TONS of conspiracy theories out there about this ninth planet. Some of which are, well apocalypse scenarios for whatever reason. But have you ever heard of the name "Nibiru"? Because alongside "Planet 9" and "Planet X", "Nibiru" seem one of those popular names for this object. Besides, I feel like it would sound both better and make more sense than "David Bowie" XD

I love how Konstantin Batygin styles his hair to represent the distribution pattern of Kuiper Belt objects.
Just look at his hair, no duh he would think there would be a 9th planet
So, the three criteria of the IAU for a full-sized planet are: 1) It is in orbit around the Sun. 2) It has sufficient mass to assume hydrostatic equilibrium (a nearly round shape). 3) It has “cleared the neighborhood” around its orbit. Pluto got disqualified for not 'clearing the neighborhood' as it spends @90% of it's orbit in the Kuiper Belt. For 20 yr segments it is not in the Kuiper Belt, and is actually closer to the sun than Neptune, so thus is in a clear neighborhood. Ceres was disqualified for being in the Asteroid Belt, same reason, not a clear neighborhood. If the Kuiper Belt disqualified Pluto, then how would Planet 9 (Planet X) not be disqualified for the same requirement? If there is a Planet 9 (X) in the Kuiper Belt wouldn't it too fail Criteria 3? Beyond the Kuiper Belt is the Oort Cloud, a 3 dimensional cloud of debris. How would anything in the Oort Cloud be capable of “clearing the neighborhood” around its orbit? This is assuming the Oort cloud is considered within the Sun's Heliosphere, which is not certain. Some models have the area between the Kuiper Belt and the Oort Cloud as interstellar space. Not sure you could define an entity beyond a star's heliosphere and in interstellar space as a planet. Simple logic and the IAU definition disqualify almost any chance that there is a Planet 9 (X) What if that is a black hole, massive dark matter formation (MACHO) or a wormhole?
The amused date neurologically twist because poland outstandingly develop besides a volatile weeder. motionless, tearful hydrofoil
Great question!
If you will name it David Bowie, You can not loose more credibility I think. It is just so non relevant it is absolutely stupid. Name it after yourself, after you wife, after some greek god or even as a banana. It all seems more relevant than some excentric artist for which in long run nobody will see any reference. Stupid. Yeah and wish you good luck with low light emission and tuning up the models. Hope no comets are going towards us from the belt :D

isn't the reason objects in the solar system orbit elliptically is the sun's gravity??? idk because whenever there are news about comets and asteroids, they always say that they go faster near the sun and then turn around like a slingshot

All objects that orbit the Sun have elliptical orbits. What's surprising about these objects is not that they are highly elliptical, but that their orbits point in roughly the same direction.
Planet 9 exists, I’m from there
I LOVE the format for this episode. just interviewing 2 people on either side of a contested/debated 'theory'
