of course they are, we want the recaps asap, and if someone's following the live coverage, it's not like you need to do much of a deep analysis yourself after the game ends.

@soon not really, u are just letting playing 2 equal opponent is likely to be a draw. But the game is solved if there is an algorithm or set of moves that gives u instructions to play the best move at any given point. For instance a solved game then human vs computer reach the same result than computer vs computer. Cause there is no reason to deviate from best strategy hence no difference in calculation or evaluation of position. A child with that instruction could beat (or draw whatever the solution for chess is) a computer like alfazero without problem.

  • Jake

    Muaj më parë

It’s also important to realize why this level of accuracy is so uncommon. It’s because it’s supposed to be very difficult to respond to extreme accuracy with similar accuracy. For example when Nepo play an extremely accurate move (especially a subtle but solid one), it generally means there are fewer viable or accurate moves/plans for Magnus to respond with. But both of these players were able to find the right moves for the whole game. Crazy

This game was fun to watch. Super accurate and every move had hidden threats that could end the game if the opponent did not come up with the best reply. Not all draws are created equal, and this is one of the most instructive draws I have ever seen.

  • RR

    2 muaj më parë

@Eddy C I would say all of the games in Carlsen-Caruana, except the last one, were extremely tense and interesting. That definitely didn't stop the complaints about a lack of decisive results. Even with Levy's great recaps, most people don't know enough about chess to appreciate the individual games. They want decisive results, because they lead to inter-game narrative and drama. Even the most exciting draws make for dull headlines.

That's three very interesting draws in a row, I am very glad as (unless it really gets out of hand) this should quiet down the requests for shorter time controls and extra/artificial incentives for decisive games - at least for a while. Game 2 in particular, and in my view, didn't lack in tension by any means.. We have all year to watch online blitz streams and there is no dearth of quick entertainment of all kinds around. I hope they will continue to promote top quality in world championships.

Levy, I am constantly impressed by your ability to create such high-quality videos in such little time (not just with these World Championship recaps, but also with your fantastic daily content with virtually no cuts in the video). I for one would love to see a video describing your process on how you make your videos (how you come up with the idea all the way to writing a script, setting up the board, mental state, etc.). I don’t know if anyone else would like to see this kind of content as well, but as someone who has wanted to start my own Chess ALthe channel for awhile now, I’d love to see how it’s done from the goat himself!

@Human Finally, your argument makes zero sense because you say draws in the WCC is more prevalent now than ever. Petrosian vs Spassky - 1966 (17 Draws) Petrosian vs Spassky - 1969 (13 Draws) Karpov vs Krochnoi - 1978 (21 Draws) Karpov vs Krochnoi - 1981 (10 Draws) Karpov vs Kasparov - 1984 (40 Draws) Kasparov vs Karpov - 1986 (15 Draws) I can keep going. Draws have always been prevalent in the WCC. Stop bullshiting and pretending you know anything about chess. I know you think you know chess but you don't. Your first comment proves so. Even an average chess player (1500~ rated) knows you're wrong.

It's worth noting that depending on which version of Stockfish you use and at what depth you let it calculate to can produce different move suggestions. For example, on move 21 Levy said that Stockfish recommended 1. Bd1, but Stockfish 14 at depth 50 indeed recommends 1. Qd3 as Sesse did. So I'm assuming that either Levy is using an older version of Stockfish, or simply didn't let it calculate to that depth.

@Fred Planatia yea that's totally correct. Really couldn't have said it better myself.

@Matthew Viramontes Yes, that is exactly what i mean. The engine may evaluate a certain move as best at a given depth, but there may be other moves which have almost the same evaluation, and if you calculate further one of those moves may become the best. Sometimes the moves result in similar situations (or the same outcome) but sometimes they are just different lines with similar evaluations and if you calculate further there is no clear winner. Saying some move X is best in that situation is misleading. If move X has a much better evaluation than the next best move and that is stable at higher depth, then they should say that. If there are competing moves with similar evaluation (but different types of positions) that should be stated, at least when its a critical decision point of the game. Then the choice made by the player may reflect their preference in terms of playing style, or a strategic decision based on the current situation in the tournament, which is also interesting. For example, do they need a win or is a draw sufficient?

@Fred Planatia Well truthfully it cannot be known which is ultimately the better move unless the position is calculated exhaustively, which is often impossible. And sometimes, even when a position can be calculated exhaustively, it turns out that there is more than one best move. A simple example would be that say you have a position where there's a mate in one, but there's more than one move that delivers mate in one, and so any moves that do so would all be the best. So let's say both 1. Bd1 and 1. Qd3 eventually led to forced mate in 35, then both moves would be equally the best. Or what if both moves led to a draw, and all the other moves led to a loss, then again, either move would be the best in that position. Or say one move led to a mate in 35, and the other to mate in 34. Okay, so technically one is "better", but the difference is trivial. Regardless, the point again is that it cannot be truly known which move is the best (if either), without an exhaustive calculation.

Yeah, Sesse uses stockfish too and at some depth engines rarely change their mind on what move to play

it would be interesting to know how different the assessment (centipawns for example) is for the two moves. I mean if its only a very slight difference and Qd3 is slightly better than Bd1 that may be less significant than if there is a big difference. So just saying the best moves isn't enough. Saying how much better it is than next best move would be informative too.

Thanks for the analysis. As a1100 rated player, I don't really understand most of the things, but hey, chess is fun to watch (or maybe I am weird, idk). Weekend was cool, had a uni test, played some Super auto pets(it's a fun auto battler game, a bit less complex than chess) and watched Hawkeye ep1&2.

Two super GMs are playing very important classical games. Of course they wont risk it and they will have draws. Magnus tries a little bit to see what Nepo does and if he has the chance he will take it, but he's not gonna take any risks.
